Members of the Smoking Policy Committee have come up with recommendations for a new university smoking policy. Members reviewed comments and suggestions from two public forums and an online campus survey, which had a response rate of almost 1,000 faculty and staff and almost 5,000 students.
“The faculty, staff and student committee took this charge very seriously and listened to the input from the survey, e-mails and forums in making this recommendation,” said Scott Richardson, associate vice president for Human Resources. “Overall, we learned that most did not feel smoking should be prohibited, but limited in a way that is respectful of non-smokers who do not want to be exposed to second-hand smoke. To do this, we needed to go beyond the ordinances in Ottawa County and Grand Rapids, but are recommending a policy that is good for Grand Valley at all of its locations.”
The recommendations will be submitted to Grand Valley's Senior Management Team.
