The School of Social Work (SSW) received an "Outstanding Community
Partner" award from the Grand Rapids Housing Commission for service
provided by students in the school’s Field Education program.
The partnership between SSW and the commission dates back to 2000, where
bachelor’s and master’s students receive field instruction while
fulfilling a required practicum. James Edwards, director of Field
Education, said students serving their internship with the commission
are able to work with residents in Housing Commission programs.
“Our students not only have the opportunity to help residents with
support counseling, but they also work on program development, grant
writing and providing resources,” said Edwards.
It was estimated that four Grand Valley interns provided $51,000 worth
of service last year for the Housing Commission. Edwards and Dave
Lehker, assistant director of Field Education, received the award at the
commission’s annual luncheon.
