Pugh receives Giant Award

Cassonya Carter Pugh, admissions coordinator in the Kirkhof College of Nursing, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Ethel Coe Humanities Award for exemplary leadership and compassion-filled work as a role model and mentor.

The honor is part of the Giant Awards, initiated in 1983 by Grand Rapids Community College’s Continuing Education Office and the African American community. Each Giants award is named for an individual who pioneered change that fostered the inclusion of minorities into all walks of life in Grand Rapids.

Pugh said she was shocked when she received news of the award. “Because of God, I am,” said Pugh. “Because He is, I am.”

The Giant Awards, annual event now in its 26th year, recognizes African Americans who have contributed to changing the quality of life in Metropolitan Grand Rapids.

“We congratulate Cassonya for this wonderful honor in recognition of her efforts on behalf of diversity issues,” said Cynthia McCurren, dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing.

An awards ceremony and banquet will be held January 26 at GRCC’s Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse.
