First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern spoke about dynamic leadership to about
140 students, faculty and staff September 17, at the Kirkhof Center.
Mulhern, Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s husband, said being an effective
leader is tougher today because people are inundated with information.
He said it is important for leaders to keep their visions simple and clear.
“The challenge is enormous,” said Mulhern. “Leaders are competing with a
lot of messages and information coming from many different places. Your
vision should fit on a matchbook; it should be that short and simple.”
Mulhern also said the picture of leadership has changed to include
people young and old, who inspire, encourage and challenge, like
parents, teachers and mentors. He added that being a successful leader
is all about emotion and being positive.
