Grand Rapids media analyst Jeff Smith will give a presentation on
"Dictators, Old and New: How the Grand Rapids Press reports on
Latin America" on February 26 at Grand Valley State University.
Smith is founder and director of the Grand Rapids Institute for
Information Democracy (GRIID), which for 10 years has taught media
literacy, served as a media watchdog, and supported community groups. In
2007, GRIID merged with Media Mouse: www.mediamouse.org. Since 1988,
Smith has worked on human rights in Guatemala and southern Mexico.
Smith’s talk is Tuesday, February 26 from 1-2:15 p.m. in Room 215/216
of the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus. The event is free and
open to the public, and media coverage is encouraged. The event is
sponsored by Grand Valley’s Latin American Studies program. For more
