ALLENDALE, Mich. — Fresh from an appearance in the national
championships last month, Grand Valley State University's wheelchair
tennis team will play in an exhibition on Saturday in Allendale in a
capper to an impressive first year.
The Grand Valley wheelchair tennis team — the first team of its kind in
the Midwest — played in the national championships at the University of
Arizona in Tucson from March 15-17. While the host team swept to victory
in every event against Grand Valley, it was not without a lot of hard
fought matches.
The exhibition will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Grand Valley tennis
courts next to the Fieldhouse on the Allendale Campus. During the
exhibition, the four Grand Valley team members will play a round-robin
event of singles and doubles. The event is free and open to the public.
There will be food, raffles, and an opportunity for people to try
playing tennis in a wheelchair. The event features many strong visuals,
and media coverage is encouraged. In the case of rain, the event will be
moved indoors to Orchard Hills Athletic Club. For more information,
contact coach Lynn Bender at (616) 283-3377.
