Grand Valley State University has lost one of its Foundation Board
members and someone who supported Grand Valley since the beginning.
Charlotte A. Johnson of Grand Haven, the widow of longtime Grand Valley
trustee Paul A. Johnson, died May 28. She was 91 years old.
Charlotte, known as Char, was serving as a member of Grand Valley’s
Foundation Advisory Cabinet. Her history with Grand Valley made her an
integral part of plans for garnering support from others in the West
Michigan community.
Her sister-in-law, Dorothy A. Johnson, currently serves on Grand
Valley’s Board of Trustees and also has a long history with the university.
“We are saddened to lose Char,” Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas
said. “She and her family have played such a pivotal role in Grand
Valley’s development as a vibrant university. She and Paul gave so much
of their time, energy, and talents to make Grand Valley and this entire
community stronger.”
Charlotte joined Paul in his dedication to Grand Valley. Paul was one of
the founders of the Foundation and served as its president for 10 years.
He served on the Board of Trustees for 26 years.
“We were privileged to have the Johnsons serve this university so
tirelessly,” said Maribeth Wardrop, vice president of University
Development. “Char was currently lending her wise counsel to the
Foundation Advisory Cabinet. Her presence was felt there and throughout
the community. She made a difference in West Michigan, and she will be missed.”
Named in his honor are the Paul A. Johnson Living Center in Allendale,
and the Paul A. Johnson Conference Hall in the Eberhard Center on the
Pew Grand Rapids Campus. He was presented an honorary doctorate of
humanities by then-President Arend D. Lubbers.
Charlotte is survived by two adult daughters.
