Grand Valley names new dean of Community and Public Service

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Grand Valley State University has named George Grant as the new dean of the College of Community and Public Service.

Grant is currently the director of Grand Valley’s School of Social Work and has also served as program director for both the Bachelor’s and Master’s of Social Work programs. He has been a faculty member within the school for 11 years and has taught at Grand Valley for 15 years.

“Dr. Grant’s academic experience, along with his past leadership of community service agencies and organizations and his on-going rich relationships with Grand Rapids area leaders, will serve the college and Grand Valley well,” said Gayle Davis, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

Grant earned his bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College, his master’s degree from Grand Valley and his doctorate from Western Michigan University. His areas of specialty include child and family services and child welfare.

“I am excited to be able to continue the wonderful work taking place in the College of Community and Public Service,” said Grant. “There are great people doing great things here and I look forward to playing a role in helping each unit within the college be successful and grow, and have a greater impact on the community we serve and live in.”

Grant will begin his new duties on July 1. Until that time, Rodney Mulder will continue in his current role as dean. Mulder announced his intention to retire earlier this year from the dean position in order to return to a teaching role within the college.
