Campus Dining receives national attention

Grand Valley's move to eliminate trays in The Commons was mentioned in a national report by ABC News.

Campus Dining eliminated trays last year as part of a comprehensive commitment to sustainability. Since going trayless last August, Campus Dining experienced a reduction in food waste of around 960 pounds of food per week. With an average of 3,500 meals per day, that works out to about six ounces of food waste per person per day — or 28 pounds of food waste per customer annually.

But the benefits have gone beyond cutting down food waste. On a weekly basis, the change has saved 1,040 gallons of water, 15 pounds of detergent and 15 gallons of sanitizer.
