Winter enrollment shows gains in diversity

Enrollment numbers for Winter 2007 are up 3.6 percent and show that Grand Valley’s campuses continue to become more diverse.

Winter 2007 enrollment totalled 22,309, up from 21,537 last year.

Lynn Blue, vice provost and dean of Academic Services and Information Technology, said since 2004, there has been a 29 percent increase in the number of ethnic groups, from 1,993 in 2004 to 2,566 this year.

Blue said enrollment figures also indicate Grand Valley is becoming more geographically diverse. In 2000, 44 percent of students were from outside the tri-county area of Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. In 2007, 50 percent are from outside the tri-county area.

A slight increase was seen from last year in the number of male student enrolled, from 8,260 last year to 8,647 this year.

Blue also said a waiting pool for freshmen fall enrolllment was established February 2.
