GVSU holds 3rd International Trumpet Seminar

Nearly 40 trumpeters, from age 15 to 51, will descend upon Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus as part of the Third Annual International Trumpet Seminar July 22-29.

The trumpet program at Grand Valley, under the direction of Richard Stoelzel, has grown into one of the elite undergraduate programs in the country. Participants representing China and the United States including Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, and Texas, will take part in this intensive seminar.

A typical day at the seminar will include activities such as master classes, group sessions, trumpet ensemble rehearsals, seminar solo competitions, and nightly recitals. Registration has closed for participation in this year’s seminar, though
all recitals and master classes are open to the public. Admission, unless noted otherwise, is $5.00 per event payable at the door.

One of the highlights will be a concert featuring legendary trumpeter Vincent DiMartino on Monday, July 23, 7 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center.

DiMartino is the Matton Endowed Professor of Music at Centre College. Equally comfortable in classical and jazz idioms, DiMartino has been the lead and solo trumpet in the Lionel Hampton Band, Chuck Mangione Band, and the Clark Terry Band. He has performed with some of the country’s finest college jazz ensembles. DiMartino has been soloist with many symphony orchestras including Cincinnati, Buffalo, Orlando, Baton Rouge, and Rochester, New York.
