This fall's best-ever freshman class at Grand Valley State University
has an average GPA of 3.57 and an average ACT score of 24.21. But these
students do more than just hit the books. They were active in their high
schools and communities. Here are some fun freshman facts.
• 16% were elected to student office in high school
• 22% were rated superior in a statewide music contest
• 64% earned a varsity letter in one or more sports
• 5% created artwork that was exhibited in a statewide or regional show
• 9% had a role in a community or professional theater production
• 6% had written works published in a public newspaper or magazine or in
a state/national high school anthology
• 49% were active in community or neighborhood service programs
• 26% worked as a volunteer aide in a hospital, clinic, or home.
• 55% percent plan to earn graduate degrees
• 96% expect to earn a B average or better in their first year of
college (50 percent expect a 3.5 GPA or better)
• 89% intend to work at a job during their first year of college
• 16% come from communities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants; 55
percent come from cities/towns with 2,000-50,000 people
