MUSKEGON, Mich. — A delegation of 10 scientists from Yunnan Province in
China is visiting Michigan on a fact-finding tour in hopes of finding
solutions to their environmental problems.
Grand Valley State University’s Annis Water Resources Institute has
been asked by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to
co-host the event. Michigan State University is the other co-host.
The delegation will visit AWRI in Muskegon, November 6, to hear a
series of presentations on research conducted at the institute, with an
eye to future collaboration and solutions.
“China has some of the most serious water quality problems on the
planet,” said Alan Steinman, director of the Annis Water Resources
Institute. “We at Grand Valley and the Annis Water Resources Institute
are honored that this delegation from the Yunnan Province is spending
the day with our research scientists. The Chinese delegates hope to
learn new techniques and approaches that they can bring home and start
implementing to improve the water quality in their province.”
The scientists will hear about AWRI research projects including
information about internal phosphorus flux from lake sediments, the
setting of lake ecosystem restoration targets, geospacial approaches to
developing watershed management plants, experimental approaches to
tackling nonpoint source pollution, and watershed hydrologic modeling.
