GVSU Student Entrepreneurs Win National Awards

Grand Valley State University student entrepreneurs took top honors at a national conference for their Web-based communication tool.

The Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization was honored at the National Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization Conference in Chicago in November. Under the leadership of directors Joel DeVriendt and Peter Sauer, the CEO Web site, www.gvsuceo.com, was noted for its ease and efficiency of communication among members. The Web site also hosts tools such as a newsletter, bulletin board, and forum.

Also, Joe Pohlen, GVSU sophomore and owner of Valley Properties, LLC won fourth place overall in the Elevator Pitch competition. This competition allows members 90 seconds to present their idea in front of a panel of judges, with cash prizes available for the finalists. Other GVSU students presenting ideas were: Irma Garcia, Brian Rider, Peter Sauer and Adam Berry.

This year, 27 GVSU members attended the national conference, which drew 1,300 collegiate entrepreneurs. Students heard speakers such as the founders of Jimmy Johns, Ubid.com, Overstock.com, and sittercity.com.

The chapter will be funding the second annual Elevator Pitch Competition at GVSU in the winter semester, along with other conferences; all of which are open to all Grand Valley students.
