Fun freshman facts for 2006

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Grand Valley's 2006 freshman class is outstanding in several ways. With an average GPA of 3.53, they still found time for a wide variety of interests. Here are a few fun facts about Grand Valley's newest Lakers.
  • 17 percent were elected to student office in high school
  • 21 percent were rated "superior" in a statewide music contest
  • 63 percent earned a varsity letter in one or more sports
  • 5 percent created artwork that was exhibited in a statewide or regional show
  • 5 percent had written works published in a public newspaper or magazine or in a state/national high school anthology
  • 6 percent won a literary award or prize for creative writing
  • 50 percent were active in community or neighborhood service programs
  • 53 percent plan to earn graduate degrees
  • 95 percent expect to earn a B average or better in their first year of college (46 percent expect a 3.5 GPA or better)
  • 88 percent intend to work at a job during their first year of college
  • 85 percent attended public high schools
  • 18 percent come from communities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants; 55 percent come from cities/towns with 2,000-50,000 people.
