Grand Valley has the distinction of being the only university in the U.S. currently granted permission from the Balanchine Trust to perform "La Source." The very upbeat ballet was choreographed by the late George Balanchine (1904-1983) who revolutionized the look of classical ballet and co-founded the New York City Ballet in 1948. The performance by the GVSU Dance Ensemble, under the direction of Jefferson Baum, will be staged by Deborah Wingert from the New York City Ballet.
"Both Ulbricht and Wingert have also graciously agreed, while here, to teach technique classes to our students," said Baum. "I really enjoy seeing the students' thrill as they work with dancers who are at the top of their profession."
The entire program runs approximately two hours and is suitable for audiences of all ages. This is the final event of Grand Valley's Fall Arts Celebration, sponsored by Macatawa Bank.
Performance times are Friday, October 27, 8 p.m., and Saturday, October 28, 2 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre, Performing Arts Center, Allendale Campus. A reception will follow the evening performance.
