Campus Leadership Week, a week dedicated to recognizing student leaders on campus, will kick off on Monday, January 16. The week is designed to focus on the many different student leaders that individually contribute their unique talents and skills to make Grand Valley State University what it is.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs will kick off festivities with the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March through the Allendale Campus from 1:45 to 3:00 p.m. Students can honor the leadership legacy of Dr. King by marching with the GVSU community from the Zumberge Library to the Fieldhouse Arena. A Martin Luther King, Jr. program will immediately follow the march at the Fieldhouse Arena. The program will feature the Voices of GVSU and keynote speaker Dr. Benjamin Carson.
Tuesday, January 17 will feature the Do Something! Expo on the downtown Pew Campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The expo will provide students with different ways to get involved, use their talents and build new skills through campus leadership opportunities. The RSO (registered student organization) Boot Camp will also be held on January 17th from 6-9 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center. The Boot Camp program will help student leaders to get the basics of student organization operations. The program is ideal for new officers in transition, experienced leaders brushing up, as well, as students preparing for future leadership roles.
The Do Something! Expo will be held at the Allendale Campus on Wednesday, January 18 from noon to 4 p.m. Students will again be presented with ways to get involved and develop their personal leadership skills through campus involvement. Those interested in reserving a space at the Expo, either at the downtown Pew Campus or the Allendale Campus, should call 331-2360 to reserve a space.
The I am Grand Valley Leadership Reception will also be held on January 18 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus. The reception recognizes student leaders, nominated by students, faculty and staff, for their unique contributions to the Grand Valley community. Award recipients and nominators will be recognized at the reception by the Office of the President.
Student Senate Day will be January 19, with an information session and reception in the Pere Marquette Room in the Kirkhof Center from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to learn about how to run in upcoming Senate elections. The Amazing Leadership Race will also be held January 19. The Amazing Leadership Race is a version of the CBS reality television show. Students will be competing through different tasks pertaining to Grand Valley leadership, local community issues, as well as historical information about the Grand Valley community. The finish line of the race will bring teams back to the Kirkhof Center Lobby at 7 p.m.
Campus Leadership Week will culminate on Friday, January 20 with an open house will be held in the Student Organization Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can stop by for refreshments, door prizes and a chance to learn more about the SOC and the many services they offer. Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society will host a roundtable discussion in the Kirkhof Center Grand River Room at 3:00 p.m. Students, faculty and staff are invited to come and discuss the concept of leadership and how it pertains to the Grand Valley community. Refreshments will also be provided. The Emerging Leaders Retreat will also kick-off on Friday. The two-day, off-campus retreat is free for students. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen and develop their leadership skills and experience. Interested participants can register at www.studentlife.gvsu.edu/signmeup. Laker Late Night will wrap up Campus Leadership Week in the SOC, Room 008, in the Kirkhof Center from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Students will have the chance to learn about different student organizations, as well as listen to music and play games. Food and prizes will be provided during the SOC Hop during Laker Late Night. With so many different activities planned, there are many ways to recognize our student leaders that strengthen the Grand Valley community with their contributions.
