Three GVSU faculty receive Fulbright Scholar grants

Three Grand Valley State University faculty members were awarded Fulbright Scholar grants to lecture or conduct research at foreign universities during the 2005-06 academic year.
  • Jim Persoon, professor of English, will teach Shakespeare and African American literature at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Persoon will team-teach an African American poetry course with Kwadwo Opoku-Agyemang, a Cape Coast faculty member who had taught at Grand Valley on a Fulbright Fellowship.

"He's the one who got me interested in pursuing this," Persoon said. "My main interest is to go to learn and understand how they see African American literature."

Persoon said a shortage of textbooks may present challenges to his class, so he collected books from colleagues before leaving for Ghana.

  • Mark Schaub, executive director of the Padnos International Center, will teach business communications at the Krakow University of Economics in Poland. Like the University of Cape Coast, the Krakow University of Economics is a partner university with Grand Valley.

  • Jolanda Westerhof-Shultz, associate professor of education, will lecture and conduct research at the Centre for Human Rights Training and Democratic Citizenship Education at the University of Zagreb in Croatia. She is a recent recipient of Grand Valley's Outstanding Teacher of the Year award.

Established in 1946 and considered Americas flagship international educational exchange activity, the Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
