Heather Lopez, a graduate physical therapy student, is the first recipient of a Mary J. Szczepanski "Never Give Up" Scholarship.
The scholarship fund was created by Rick Szczepanski to honor the memory of his mother, Mary, who died from multiple sclerosis in 1995. Student scholarship recipients raise money for the Michigan Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Lopez is the first enrolled student to earn a scholarship; past recipients have been high school students.
