Speeches from filmmaker mark Women's History Month

Documentary filmmaker Gayla Jamison, whose work focuses on Latin American life, will give two lectures at Grand Valley State University March 16 to help mark Women's History Month.

Jamison is the creator of more than 20 documentaries, including "Approach of Dawn," "Living in America: 100 Years of Ybor City," and "Scraps of Life." Her films have created awareness to help improve working conditions for women in Guatemala, and provided a voice for thousands of Chilean women after their husbands and fathers were murdered during the Pinochet years.

Jamison will address "Women and LaLucha: Women Activists in Latin America" at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, in the Grand River Room of the Kirkhof Center, at the Allendale Campus. During "Finding Ourselves in the Other," Jamison will discuss working with another culture and immigration to the United States post-9/11. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in rooms 215/216 of the Kirkhof Center.

Her appearances are sponsored by Grand Valley's Women's Center, Women and Gender Studies Program, Modern Languages and Literatures, Padnos International Center and Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center, along with Amnesty International.
