Organic coffee farming, justice discussed at GVSU conference

Nicaraguan coffee farmers will be among the speakers at the fourth annual Cup of Justice Conference, sponsored by several Grand Valley State University departments and community organizations.

The conference will run from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday, October 10, in the Loosemore Auditorium of the DeVos Center in Grand Rapids. Registration is $5 per person at the door.

Speakers Rolando Talvera Flores, a coffee farmer; Marbely Garcia Lopez, expert coffee cupper; and Yara Talavera, coordinator of the Miraflor, Nicaragua, Eco-Tourism program will talk about organic coffee farming and where coffee dollars go. Fair trade coffee will be served.

Sponsors include GVSUs Latin American Studies and Women and Gender Studies programs, Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, West Michigan Environmental Action Committee, Higher Ground Trading Company and Circle Pines Cooperative.
