Journalist Joshua Hammer, former Jerusalem bureau chief for Newsweek magazine, will talk about the role of American journalists in the Middle East on February 24 at Grand Valley State University.

Hammer is appearing at Grand Valley as part of the Michigan Model Arab League. His talk will be from 2:30-3:45 p.m., at the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus.

The Michigan Model Arab League 2005 will take place at Grand Valley from Thursday, February 24 through Saturday, February 26. Each year, with support from the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations and the Padnos International Center of Grand Valley State University, the Middle East Studies program hosts the Michigan Model Arab League. This is a three-day simulation attended by students from colleges and universities throughout the state. They come prepared to role-play as delegates from the 23 member states of the Arab League. In addition to committee meetings, scheduled activities include a guest speaker at the opening plenary session, a Middle Eastern dinner and entertainment. Grand Valley students can receive course credit for participation in this event.

Also appearing during the event will be Turkish musician Latif Bolat. Bolat returns to give a concert of Turkish folk music and devotional Sufi songs. The concert is free and open to the public and will be held Friday, February 25, 7-9 p.m., in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus.
