Local educators honored at GVSU convocation

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University's College of Education will honor two area educators during its convocation ceremonies scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, at the DeVos Place Ballroom in downtown Grand Rapids.

About 350 graduates are expected to participate in convocation: 126 will receive master's degree certification and 222 will be newly certified educators. The ceremony is a precursor to Grand Valley's Commencement, scheduled for December 10 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR
During convocation, Paula Moreau, a high school math teacher for Montague Area Public Schools, will receive the Outstanding Educator Award. Moreau received her master's degree in math education from Grand Valley in 1995. Now, in her 18th year at Montague, Moreau is being honored for her work in integrating the concepts of gender differences in mathematics education.

OUTSTANDING ADMINISTRATOR AWARD
Kevin O'Neill, superintendent of Coopersville Area Public Schools, will receive the Outstanding Administrator Award. O'Neill earned his master's in education from Grand Valley in 1976 and in 2002, was one of the first Grand Valley students to complete his dissertation and receive his Doctorate of Education through the GVSU-EMU Doctoral Cohort program.
