A unique palette of more than 20 traditional Japanese woodwind and Asian percussion instruments will be featured during a concert by the Bamboo Orchestra on Wednesday, March 2 at Grand Valley State University.
Based in Japan, the ensemble strives to create music that transcends all ethnic identities, personalities, and multitudes of music knowledge and genres. The orchestra's compositions contain resonating sound and defining tones that evoke a sense of harmony between nature and people, a characteristic found in Japanese culture. Each instrument is made from bamboo, which has been used since antiquity to make instruments in many Asian regions.
The orchestra will perform at 12 p.m. as part of the Arts at Noon series, in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus. Admission is free. It is a featured event of the Midwest World Fest, a nonprofit program dedicated to bringing world arts to America's heartland with the goal of fostering appreciation for other cultures.
