Humanics program will host 'People Speak' event

The campus community is invited to participate in "The People Speak," a nationwide effort to include Americans in the discussion of the country's role in the world.

Sponsored by the Humanics Nonprofit Management Program, a panel discussion will be held on Wednesday, November 30, from noon-1 p.m. in the Pere Marquette Room of the Kirkhof Center. The event is open to the public and free; a light lunch will be served.

The event will include a 20-minute panel discussion on social issues facing West Michigan, as well as informal small-group time with nonprofit executives to allow students to learn about the work of specific organizations and the jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities available at each nonprofit.

Participants include Girls Scouts of Michigan Trails, Habitat for Humanity, Center for Effective Compassion Program Manager Institute, New Focus National, United Way of West Michigan, Mixed Greens, Grand Rapids Youth Commonwealth, Grand Rapids Children's Museum, Boy Scouts of America and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

"We are proud to be part of this diverse, nonpartisan coalition of organizations who created the People Speak," said Humanics Director Annie Davies MacLachlan. "This project provides an important forum for Americans to discuss the state of our communities and options for making them better."

From September through November, thousands of high schools, colleges, civic and religious groups will organize similar events. The series takes place as the United Nations celebrates its 60th anniversary.
