Dewey Hoitenga, professor of philosophy and former department chairman, died on July 25 at age 74.
Hoitenga joined Grand Valley's faculty in 1965 and retired in 2001. Stephen Rowe, professor of philosophy, called Hoitenga "an intensely sincere philosopher, a devoted teacher and a colleague of great integrity."
During his years at Grand Valley, Hoitenga chaired the All-College Senate and twice served as chair of the Arts and Humanities Division. He chaired the Philosophy Department from 1975-77 and 1979-88.
He earned doctorate and master's degrees from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree in divinity from Calvin College.
Funeral services were held July 28. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvin Theological Seminary or Hospice of Holland Home.
