Grand Valley students move to campus -- week ends with annual convocation

Parents moving their students into living centers at Grand Valley State University will have help this week from faculty and staff members and alumni.

"Helping Hands" is a growing tradition at Grand Valley, with increasing numbers of employees and alumni carrying luggage and computers and checking new students into living centers.

Of note:

-- Grand Valley Alumni Association members are scheduled to help on Tuesday, August 23, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Media members wishing to cover move-in should check in at Kleiner Commons (near parking lot D near the north-end living centers on the Allendale Campus), to find alumni members.

-- Grand Valley President Mark A. Murray will help move students on Thursday, August 25, from 10 a.m.-noon.

The week ends with the annual convocation ceremony, an official start to the academic year. Convocation will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 26, in the Fieldhouse Arena at the Allendale Campus.

Murray will give the convocation address and present faculty awards to Teresa Castelao-Lawless and Jolanda Westerhof-Shultz.

Castelao-Lawless, associate professor of philosophy, will receive the Distinguished Contribution in a Discipline Award. Westerhof-Shultz, associate professor of education, will receive the Outstanding Teacher Award.
