Grand Valley photo exhibit explores students' vision

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Thirteen senior photography students at Grand Valley State University will exhibit their thesis work in a group exhibition "Frame 36," from November 28 through December 10. An opening reception with the photographers is December 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public at the Art Gallery in the Performing Arts Center, on the Allendale Campus.

"Each thesis consists of 20 pieces on one subject of interest to the student," said Victoria Veenstra who teaches the thesis seminar. "Select images from each are included in the exhibit, which explores the unique vision each student has developed through their studies in the School of Communications."

Kristin Connolly was backpacking in West Virginia and became inspired by what she saw. She has spent many weekends driving back with her camera to capture more images, choosing black and white over color film. Eric Corky Swanson's work focuses on the brilliant color and structural interest of the abandoned Kennecott mines in Alaska. While Vennessa Remenak explores how people react to the American flag today, four years after the wave of patriotism that swept the nation after September 11.

The exhibit also features the diverse works of students Bethann Jensen, Diana Arguelles, Sarah Wiles, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Sheridan, Allison Huyck, Samantha Johnson, Jennifer Stevens, Peter Strobridge, and Kristyn Mustard. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call the Art Gallery at (616) 331-2563.
