"Jamaica Today: Six Women Artists" exhibition in the Grand Valley Art Gallery runs October 3-November 4. All six artists make Jamaica their home, but their visual vocabulary differs dramatically from one another as they express their insights of this island nation. An opening reception with artists will be held Thursday, October 6, 5-7 p.m. A Prelude Carillon Concert begins at 4:30 p.m. at Cook Carillon Plaza.
October 10 brings exceptional Faculty/Student Collage Concert featuring Artist-Faculty members Arthur Campbell, Pablo Mahave-Veglia, Greg Secor, Aviram Reichert, Dale Schriemer, Kathryn Steiler, Marlen Vavr¿kov¿ and award-winning students from Grand Valley's Department of Music. 8 p.m. Cook-DeWitt Center. A Prelude Carillon Concert is 7:20-7:50 p.m. at Cook Carillon Plaza.
Poetry Night, October 12, is an evening of readings and conversation with two American poets, C.K. Williams and Philip Levine. Williams, who teaches in the Writing Program at Princeton University, won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Repair (1999) and was a finalist in 1997 with The Vigil. Levine, who was born in Detroit and educated at Wayne State University, teaches at NYU. He is the author of sixteen books of poetry, including The Simple Truth (1994) which won the Pulitzer Prize. Both poets will read from their work at 7 p.m., at Grand Valley's Eberhard Center, Pew Grand Rapids Campus, 301 West Fulton. A booksigning and afterglow reception follows.
Distinguished Academic Lecturer, Bruce Mau speaks on "Massive Change" October 18. The founder and creative director of Bruce Mau Design, Inc., in Toronto, presents an intelligent, visually provocative exploration of our new design potential at 7 p.m., Loosemore Auditorium, DeVos Center, Pew Grand Rapids Campus. A Prelude Carillon Concert is at 6:20 p.m., Beckering Family Carillon.
Dance Stars of the New Millennium IV, on October 28 and 29, brings dancers from America 's foremost ballet companies including New York City Ballet soloists Amanda Edge and Daniel Ullbrecht, a new pas de deux, and selections from The GVSU Dance Ensemble. Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Louis Armstong Theatre, Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $20. A Prelude Carillon Concert on October 28 is at 7:20-7:50 p.m., Cook Carillon Plaza.
