Bard to Go gives free performance

What do you get when you perform Shakespeare's work in a non-traditional, hip fashion appealing to the younger generation while maintaining the integrity of the text and content? A whole new audience, thanks to Bard to Go.

Grand Valley State University brings Bard to Go to regional schools with the touring show "Lovestruck." The production of six students and a stage manager combines scenes from a variety of popular Shakespeare plays, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Taming of the Shrew, and Hamlet, into a 50-minute collage about the many facets of love. Scenes range from playful flirtation to passion, jealousy, and betrayal. The purpose is to show that Shakespeare's work need not be dry and inaccessible.

Bard to Go is part of the educational outreach program incorporated into the Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival. Last year, Bard to Go performed at eight Michigan high schools to more than 1,450 students. The cast traveled further than ever before when the production traveled last spring to Kingston, Jamaica and played to over 700 secondary school students during a week-long tour. This year's performances are directed by Ian Borden and produced by Elaine Eldridge.

There will be a free public performance of Bard to Go on Saturday, November 5 at 1 p.m. in Loosemore Auditorium, on Grand Valley's Pew Grand Rapids Campus. The Student Competition Awards Ceremony and reception is scheduled to follow the performance. Admission is free and open to the public. This performance is always a popular crowd pleaser appropriate for all ages.
