"We strive to enhance and preserve freshwater resources through an extensive multidisciplinary approach to research, public education and outreach," said AWRI Director Alan Steinman. "These funds will allow us to renovate and repair our field station building into a functional research and education facility."
The 10,000-square-foot building is currently only suitable for storage. Renovation funding was included in a 2006 appropriations act, which the House passed today by a vote of 392 to 31. The bill will now be taken up by the Senate, where it is expected to pass.
An announcement by U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, praised the institute and staff. "The accomplishments of Dr. Steinman and his staff serve as a model for other regions of the Great Lakes and around the nation," said Hoekstra.
Matt McLogan, Vice President for University Relations, expressed thanks to Hoekstra for successfully persuading his colleagues to make this item part of the budget. "We're very grateful for his support and the expression of confidence that it represents," said McLogan.
