Showing Off Engineering Skills

As Grand Valley State University and Michigan Technological University prepare to battle it out on the football field at Ann Arbor's famed Big House, representatives from Grand Valley's Padnos College of Engineering will be showing off the exciting side of a career in engineering.

Grand Valley is participating in the Michigan Youth Engineering & Science Expo on Saturday, November 6 at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. The event is being held in conjunction with the Bash at the Big House and has two sessions before and after the game (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4-6:30 p.m.).

"What they're trying to do is show these kids what engineering is," said professor Jeff Ray, adding that the event is aimed at increasing middle and high school student awareness and interest in pursuing engineering and science education.

Ray said Grand Valley will be taking some student projects, including robots built by students.

Universities and organizations within Michigan will showcase educational pathways to engineering, science and technology careers. Corporate exhibitors from Michigan corporations will talk to youth from throughout Michigan about careers in engineering and technology within their companies.

Corporations and organizations are sponsoring blocks of Expo tickets that have been given to youth at no charge through school systems. Each ticket will admit one student to the Expo and the football game. At least 30 companies -- including the Big Three -- will be represented, as will 15 colleges and universities. As many as 20,000 students are expected to attend the event.
