MTU, Grand Valley VIPs named honorary kickoff chairs of Bash at the Big House'

Arend "Don" Lubbers, Grand Valley State University president emeritus, and James Mitchell, former chair of Michigan Tech's Board of Control and a 1965 MTU graduate, were named honorary chairs for the "Bash at the Big House" football game.

Grand Valley and Michigan Tech will play on November 6 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The game could possibly set a Division II attendance record. The current record is 61,143 was set in September 1979 when Shippensburg and Slippery Rock met at Michigan Stadium.

The Bash at the Big House also serves as a major fund-raiser for MTU's football program. Last year, MTU briefly canceled its 82-year-old football program because of budget constraints.

Lubbers and Mitchell are avid supporters of both universities. Lubbers was one of the first donors in the fund-raising drive to save Tech's football program. Mitchell is a partner in the Price, Heneveld, Cooper, DeWitt & Litton law firm in Grand Rapids. He is a major donor to the Arend D. and Nancy Lubbers Scholarship Fund at Grand Valley, and his law firm has endowed an engineering scholarship at GVSU.

Tickets for the game are available by calling 1-888-642-4832 or visiting www.bashatthebighouse.com.

In conjunction with the game, state universities and more than 30 companies will present the Michigan Youth Engineering and Science Expo (Yes! Expo) at Crisler Arena. The expo was created to educate and excite eighth-12th grade students about engineering and science careers.
