A moment of silence will be observed as part of the celebrations
honoring the national holiday celebrating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. on January 19, 2004.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to observe a moment of
silence promptly at 2:00 p.m. in remembrance of this influential leader
of the Civil Rights Movement. The moment of silence will coincide with
the end of the Silent March in honor of Dr. King, which will begin at
1:45p.m. at Zumberge Library and conclude at the Cook-Dewitt Center.
Following the march will be a presentation by speaker Susan L. Taylor
and a performance by the Voices of GVSU.
Taylor oversees all divisions of the multimedia organization. More than
1 million people subscribe to Essence monthly; the company lists a
readership of 7.6 million. Taylor, who served as editor-in-chief from
1981-2000, continues to write the In the Spirit column. She
is currently launching a new magazine for the company.
Taylor will also highlight the Grand Rapids community celebration later
that day at Ford Fieldhouse on the Grand Rapids Community College
campus. The 18th annual celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sponsors
include GRCC, GVSU and the IMDA Ministerial Alliance.
