Grand Valley State University students and their suitcases are headed back to campus this week. But they, and their parents, will receive lots of help hauling boxes and backpacks into university housing.
Continuing a long-standing tradition, many faculty and staff members pitch in to make the move-in as smooth as possible. Volunteers serve as parking guides, staff information tables, hand out room keys and help students haul belongings to their rooms.
President Mark A. Murray will join other faculty and staff members as a move-in volunteer on Thursday, August 26, from 8-11:30 a.m.
The formal start to the 2004-05 academic year begins on Friday, August 27, at convocation. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Fieldhouse Arena, speakers will include President Murray, Student Senate President Jonathan Osborn and Faculty Senate President Jean Nagelkerk. Awards will be presented to recipients for Outstanding Teaching, Distinguished Contribution to a Discipline, and Outstanding University and Community Service.
