Former Division I assistant named head men's basketball coach

Grand Valley named Ric Wesley, former associate head coach at Southwest Missouri State, as its head men's basketball coach.

Wesley replaces Terry Smith, who resigned in early March. Smith coached at GVSU for seven years and compiled a 110-83 record.

Wesley most recently completed his fifth year at Southwest Missouri State, including the last year as associate head coach and primary recruiter. Prior to SMS, Wesley served as an assistant coach at Lamar University in Texas and at Iowa State University.

"This is an exciting time for my family," Wesley said. "I knew that Grand Valley State was an ideal situation for me from a professional and personal standpoint. Grand Valley State has all of the components and elements necessary to build a successful program. I feel that Grand Valley State is the benchmark for Division II institutions in terms of academic and athletic excellence."

A native of Chesaning, Wesley graduated from Central Michigan University.
