"Dance Stars" brings together renowned dancers including Griff Braun of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet; Amanda Edge of the New York City Ballet; Ramon Flowers, of such Broadway shows as Swan Lake, A Chorus Line, and The Lion King; Anna Laghezza, veteran of major Miami, Minnesota, New York and Boston companies; and others. Tokyo native Chieko Imada, former soloist with the Tokyo Ballet and current assistant artistic director for Ballet Tuscon in Arizona, is a guest choreographer for the show.
The program also features Grand Valley's Dance Ensemble, which is made up of more than 30 dance students under the direction of GVSU dance program director Jefferson Baum. The Dance Ensemble will perform "All That Jazz" from the Broadway show and film "Chicago."
The program presents a wide array of styles from classical to modern to jazz, including George Balanchine's vigorous "Tarantella" and "Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux," the jazz classic "Temptation," and choreography for the much-loved ballad "My Funny Valentine." Guest artist Amanda Kay, from South Africa, will visit Grand Valley to present the world premiere of the dance "Nina." Kay, who danced on Broadway with Saturday Night Live, in Ricky Martin's MTV Music Video Awards performance, and in movies Zoolander and Spike Lee's Bamboozled, is a member of the innovative and internationally acclaimed dance company MOMIX.
Dance Stars of the New Millennium III is part of the Fall Arts Celebration, showcasing an excellent program of arts and humanities events at Grand Valley.
