"It is important to recognize the hard work these students have done throughout the year," said Margo Dill, program coordinator of the Regional Math and Science Center at Grand Valley. "This event is meant to be a relaxing and educational evening."
The dinner will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at 5:30 p.m. at the Kirkhof Center on Grand Valley's Allendale campus. Following the dinner, the students will move to the Louis Armstrong Theatre for an exciting presentation by children's author David. M. Schwartz.
Award-winning children's author David M. Schwartz will present "Math + Literature = Learning + Fun!" May 5, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre on Grand Valley's Allendale campus.
Schwartz will also give two presentations, at 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. at Creston High School in Grand Rapids, speaking to a total of about 1000 students.
A popular speaker in schools and libraries, Schwartz will be speaking about the excitement of big numbers, and the connections between numbers, science and stories. He leads students on a fascinating journey through the world measured in huge sums, from atoms and cells to continents and the cosmos.
"Children love big numbers in the same way they love big animals like dinosaurs and whales," said Schwartz. "For that reason, big numbers are the perfect way to get kids excited about Math."
Schwartz has written over 30 children's books including the classic, "How Much is a Million?" which has been featured on Public Television's "Reading Rainbow."
The seminar is a cooperative event between Grand Valley's School of Education, Regional Math & Science Center, the Grand Rapids Public Schools and Smiths Aerospace.
