Photography exhibit highlights Cesar Chavez Day

Grand Valley's Latino Student Union is marking the 10th anniversary of Cesar Chavez's death with numerous activities highlighted by a Smithsonian photography exhibit of Latino life.

Robert Kennedy once called Chavez, 'one of the heroic figures of our time.' Chavez founded the first successful farm workers' union and later served as president of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Aztec Eagle (Mexico's highest award presented to people of Mexican heritage who have made major contributions outside of Mexico).

Grand Valley events to honor Chavez (1927-1993) are planned for Wednesday, April 2, at the Allendale Campus:
  • 10:50 a.m.: Silent march will begin at Zumberge Library and end at the Cook Carillon Tower.
  • 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Free luncheon and photo exhibit (Smithsonian Institute's 'Americano's Latino Life in the United States') in the Kirkhof Center, Grand River Room.

Joining the Latino Student Union to sponsor the event are Sigma Lambda Beta, the Office of Student Life, and the Multicultural Affairs Office.
