The Kurds of Iraq, a population very much in the news as the war with Iraq advances, will be the subject of an upcoming lecture sponsored by the Middle East Studies program of Grand Valley.

Robert Olson, Ph.D., a prominent scholar on the Ottoman Empire and contemporary politics of the Middle East, will speak on 'The Kurds of Iraq in the New Geopolitics of the Middle East.' His talk begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at the Kirkhof Center, room 204, Allendale Campus. The lecture is open to the public free of charge.

Olson is a professor of Middle East history and politics at the University of Kentucky. He has published numerous books and articles on Islam and Kurds, including 'The Kurdish Nationalist Movement in the 1990s: Its Impact on Turkey and the Middle East' (1996). The recipient of many awards and a former Fulbright scholar, Olson is a current member of the Strategic Assessment Group of the Central Intelligence Agency's Future Panel on Turkey and the Kurdish Question.
