The highly celebrated Israeli musician Eyal Sela will bring his blend of
Eastern and Western ethnic music to Grand Valley on Wednesday, October
8. The noon performance, at the Cook-DeWitt Center, is part of the Arts
at Noon series and Arts Midwest tour.
Sela and his four-member ensemble, Darma, use music to tell the stories
of the land and people of the Middle East, the Balkans, Turkey, and
India. Some of the traditional instruments the musicans play are the
Iranian zarb (an Iranian percussion instrument), the Turkish clarinet,
the oud (a stringed instrument considered the percursor to the Spanish
guitar), the Indian bamboo flute, and the Irish penny whistle, to name a few.
Sela, a graduate of the Music Academy of Tel-Aviv University, has
recorded with many highly regarded artists and is becoming one of the
most influential world music artists. He has performed internationally
and is now touring the United States with Darma as part of Arts Midwest,
a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing world arts and cultural
events to America's heartland.
