A look at the journalism of the past two decades can reveal much about
how the field has changed over the years, and where it's heading. The
public is invited to join Grand Valley's School of Communications (SOC)
for an indepth look at journalism with a top expert.
Rem Rieder, editor of
American Journalism Review
, will present 'American Journalism: Past, Present and Future' at 7 p.m.
on Thursday, October 9, in the Loosemore Auditorium of the GVSU DeVos
Center, 401 West Fulton St. in Grand Rapids. The event is open to the
public free of charge. To determine audience size, those planning to
attend are asked to call (616) 331-3668.
Rieder's visit kicks off the SOC's 20th anniversary celebration. The
SOC, which encompasses eight majors, was founded in 1983 with the
principle of combining professional practice with a strong liberal arts
foundation. That ideal is still evident today as seen in the school's
anniversary slogan: 'Inspiring Thought, Perfecting Practice.'
Upcoming anniversary events also include:
An Evening with Helen Thomas and Suzanne Geha, presented at 7 p.m.
October 28 at the DeVos Center in conjunction with Grand Valley's Fall
Arts Celebration;
An overview of the role of public relations with Cheryl
Proctor-Rogers, regional corporate affairs manager of HBO, at 7:30
p.m. on November 13 at the DeVos Center;
Several events in 2004 ¿ including changing displays of work by SOC
students, faculty, and alumni at the GVSU Art Gallery, January 5-March

on February 5; a screening of films produced in the SOC's Summer Film
Project; and more.
