Taste of Bosnia

A new bakery owned and operated by a pair of Bosnian immigrants has brought Central European delicacies to Grand Rapids.

The Euro Star Bakery and Grocery opened its doors in November at 4575 28th St. S.E. Owned by Sakib Kajtezovic and Amir Sabic, it is the first Bosnian-owned and operated bakery in Grand Rapids.

The store offers handmade breads, pastries, sandwiches and other baked goods that originate from the owners' hometown of Velika Kladusa, Bosnia. Unique grocery items from Central Europe are also available including chocolates, mineral water, coffees, jams, jellies and cookies.

Kajtezovic, who has been a baker since 1989 in Bosnia, uses original Bosnian recipes as the basis of his family-owned business. After coming to the United States in 1997, Sakib and his family worked at starting a business that would allow him to apply his trade and give him the opportunity to be his own boss. His family has been in the grocery business for almost 20 years.

Sabic, who is the cook at Euro Star, came to the United States in 1998. He managed the four star Bihac Hotel in the Czech Republic before coming to this country. His family was in the restaurant business for many years in the old country. Among Euro Star's best customers are the many Central European immigrants who have recently relocated to the West Michigan area.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Grand Valley State University was instrumental in helping the Euro Star Bakery get started.

A European bakery is a unique and welcome addition to the many small businesses we see every day. It reflects a nationwide trend in entrepreneurs who are coming to the U.S. to experience not only political independence but financial independence. said David Sayers, Business Consultant for the SBDC.

The Euro Star Bakery and Grocery is open daily from 9am to 9pm.
