Rocket man

Althetic Director Tim Selgo will be inducted into the University of Toledo's Varsity Hall of Fame during ceremonies on February 2.

A three-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection, Selgo played guard on Rocket teams (1976-80) that won two conference titles and twice went to the NCAA Tournament. He scored eight points during a Sweet 16 game against Notre Dame in 1979.

Had the Rockets beaten the Irish, they would have met a Michigan State team led by Earvin Magic Johnson. In the first round of the 1980 NCAA Tournament, Selgo scored 18 points in a 94-91 loss to Florida State.

Selgo was UT's women's basketball coach from 1985-88 and associate athletic director from 1988-96. He was named GVSU athletic director in February 1996.

It was really a pretty neat phone call, Selgo said. I told (UT athletic director Pete Liske) that this was one of my most enjoyable jobs at Grand Valley ¿ when I get to call the Hall of Fame inductees ¿ and here I was at the other end of this call.

Ronald VanSteeland, GVSU vice president for finance and administration, said Selgo's induction was significant because it came in his first year of eligibility.

Tim and his family have already made a substantial contribution to GVSU and the athletic community, VanSteeland said. We hope that he will keep his Toledo Hall of Fame memorabilia hanging in his GVSU office for many years to come.
