The university community remembered Margaret Proctor in a memorial service Monday in the Cook-DeWitt Center. The longtime GVSU communications professor died December 28, 2000 in her Holland home, following a lengthy battle with leukemia.
Proctor ¿ who was known outside of the university as Margaret Proctor Cohen ¿ was an associate professor of communications. She began teaching at GVSU in 1972.
Her husband of 29 years, Bill Cohen, spoke of her dedication for GVSU.
I think her real passion, more than for the institution, was for her students, he said. She had an ability to get very intense about whatever she was involved in.
She would take student papers with her to read wherever she went, Cohen added. She would just put herself entirely into them, he said.
Her other interests included fishing, music, and French culture and language.
Proctor was born in Schenectady, NY, to Lewis B. and Elizabeth Proctor. She completed her bachelor's degree at Wellesley College, master's degree from Harvard University and her doctorate degree at the University of Chicago.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Alan, Elizabeth, and Miriam (Mia); and a brother, Lewis Buddy Proctor of Penngrove, Calif.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY, 10605 or the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA, 22203.
