Governor Engler has announced his budget recommendations for the coming fiscal year. He has proposed a 10.3 percent increase in GVSU's appropriation. If adopted by the Legislature, GVSU would be funded at $4,500 per Fiscal Year Equated Student.
President Arend Lubbers congratulated Governor Engler for proposing an increase in the university's appropriation in what is by all accounts a lean budget year. I appreciate the fact that the Governor has heard our plea and has proposed treating our students with greater fairness, Lubbers said.
Vice President for University Relations Matt McLogan concurred in the sentiment.
We thank the governor for his proposal, which would bring Grand Valley up to its funding floor for the first time. The funding increase represents a step in the right direction and we are grateful that the Governor has remembered us in his steps toward what he calls the 'Next Michigan,' McLogan said.
McLogan added that GVSU will be making its case in support of the Governor's recommendation at a state legislative hearing in Lansing next week. Lubbers and McLogan will be joined by Benjamin Witt, president of the GVSU student senate.
