Worldwide learning

Grand Valley State University joins other colleges and universities across the world in celebrating the first International Education Week, through November 17.

The observance is part of a renewed emphasis on international education launched in April by the U.S. Department of Education. The campaign calls for more federal support to strengthen components of global education including foreign language skills and student exchanges.

GVSU's celebration encompasses music, art, food and lecture events, all with an international flair. Some highlights at the Allendale campus:

¿ Israeli percussionist Chen Zimbalista performs with tap dancer Zahi Patish and pianist Nadav Rubinstein, 3 p.m. Tuesday, Performing Arts Center.

¿ Geeta Khadka, Fulbright scholar from Nepal, speaks on the status of women in India, noon Wednesday, Kirkhof Center.

¿ Ethnic Festival 2000 features food booths, language lab, children's corner, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Fieldhouse.
