Make a difference in the world, but make time for family and life's other truly important things - that was the message former Lt. Governor Connie Binsfeld brought to GVSU graduates in Traverse City Tuesday night.
Nearly 80 students received their diplomas, having completed their undergraduate or graduate Grand Valley degrees at the University Center in Traverse City or through the Social Work program offered at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.
Families that are committed to one another can make it work, just as you have by balancing families, careers and the extra demand of college, Binsfeld said.
I feel strongly about the family structure, which those of you in social work, education and health care work so hard to support.
Binsfeld, who started her career in Lansing 24 years ago as a state representative, and concluded her time there as Governor John Engler's first lt. governor, said she did not enter public life with the ambition to become a household name.
Rather, I entered public service with the ambition to make a difference on matters that made a difference to me.
She noted her support of environmental and family issues as those most important to her.
