Top Poet Coming

United States Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky will give a public reading at GVSU this Wednesday, March 29. The event will be at 4 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale campus.

Pinsky, who has three of his poems featured in the April issue of the Atlantic Monthly, was brought to GVSU by Patricia Clark, the university's own poet-in-residence. Pinsky was quoted in a February 10 USA Today article about the popularity of poetry on the Internet. Lycos, an Internet search engine, reported that poetry ranks eighth among the top 50 search topics.

Poetry fills the craving for art on a truly personal, individual level, Pinsky told USA Today. He said poets are drawn to the Internet because it's an effective, cheap and immediate form of publication.

Having been appointed U.S. Poet Laureate by the Librarian of Congress, Pinsky put the Internet to good use. He began a national favorite poem project, which includes an online collection of Americans naming their favorite poems and poets.
