Tentative Approval

A committee of state senators and representatives have given tentative approval to the State of Michigan higher education budget at a meeting Friday in Mt. Pleasant.

The conference committee approved funding for GVSU and the state's other universities. If as expected the House and Senate ratified Friday's agreement, GVSU would receive a ten percent increase in its appropriation.

Matthew McLogan, Vice President for University Relations expressed pleasure at the high percentage increase but disappointment that GVSU will not receive the $4,500 per student funding level that the state law assigns to Grand Valley. I had hoped that in a year when a large amount of new money was put into the higher ed budget that our gap would have been narrowed by more than it was.

Earlier this year both the House and Senate approved bills that would have funded GVSU at the $4,500 level. Friday's conference committee action will produce funding of approximately $4,300 per FYES.

The ten percent increase for Grand Valley is the largest percentage increase awarded to any campus.
